Looking back at my life, I'm not really sure why I joined the marching band in my freshman year 96-97 at Columbia River HS, but I am very glad that I did. The marching band that year was, I think, one of the greatest things I have ever been a part of. We worked hard and aimed for perfection. It is odd how many times in my life I've been in a challenging place and I will still think a yell of "PUSH!!!" which we would all yell at the end of the long night practices. This philosophy of no matter how tired you are, of pushing through to completion is one of the best life lessons I ever got out of high school. That year the hard work paid off as we won sweepstakes at the shows and we’re the best marching band in the state. After a year like that I got a boundary exception and chose to follow Mr. Robertson to Skyview. Over the next 3 years I saw a lot of Mr. Robertson, including a fun 97-98 year in the wind ensemble with only 14 other students. During these building years, the band never achieved the success I saw my freshman year, but it was a pleasure to watch the band grow each year with knowledge of what he was trying to build and achieve. High School is a hard time for anybody, and I am grateful for the marching band program that gave me a group of band-nerd friends to make it through with, and none of that would have happened without someone like Steve Robertson.
Thanks Mr. Robertson
On a lighter note is he still giving the same written test on music theory? After 4 years I had the answers memorized, I can’t forget my horror at getting a D on that test my freshman year afraid I was going to fail band.
